A PENNY FOR YOUR THOUGHTS
this idiom first appeared in the written language in 1522 in last four things by sir thomas more:
‘in such wise yt not wtoute som note & reproach os suche vagaraunte mind, other folk sodainly say to them: a peny for your thought.’
modernly, someone says a penny for your thoughts when they want to know what you are thinking, usually when they have been waiting to hear what is on your mind and after a period of silence.
