Cattaraugus County Reports 55 COVID Cases, 1 Death Nov. 8

The Cattaraugus County Health Department reported 55 news cases of COVID-19 Monday and one more death, bringing the totals for the first eight days of November to 393 cases and 15 deaths.

In a separate press release issued Monday, the health department reported that on Monday, a 79-year-old woman died, and on Sunday, a 49-year-old man died — both from respiratory failure caused by the virus.

The seven-day positivity rate on Monday was 8.9%, an increase from Sunday's rate of 8.7%. The number of unvaccinated persons among the 55 who tested positive Monday was 33; the number for vaccinated persons, 22.

Since the county began tracking COVID-19 cases in March 2020, 8,705 residents have tested positive for the virus, and 154 have died. The county did not provide the age or gender of the person who died from COVID-19-related complications on Monday.

On Monday, the county reported 513 active cases, 8,083 recoveries, 687 quarantined contacts and 38 hospitalizations. The percentage rate for county residents who have received a first dose of a vaccination is 50.1%. The percentage for those who have completed vaccinations is 46%.

During October, the county recorded 1,283 cases, the second-highest monthly total in Cattaraugus County since the pandemic began. In September, the health department confirmed 858 cases, the fourth-highest monthly total in Cattaraugus County since the pandemic began. ​The June case count was 24; the July count, 46, and the August count, 401. The highest count was in December: 1,427. The third highest was in January: 1,200.


Monday's report showed the number of health care workers who have tested positive since March 2020 increased by one to 325, but the percentage rate decreased from 3.8 to 3.7 of the total. The number of health care workers who have not tested positive is 8,380, 96.3%. Since March 2020:

  • More females than males have tested positive for coronavirus in the county. Monday, 29 were female, and 26 were male, and the numbers were 4,651, 53.4%, for females and 4,054, 46.6%, for males.

  • More residents have shown symptoms than have not. On Monday, 30 people who had tested positive showed symptoms, and 25 did not. Overall, Monday's totals were 7,064, 81.1%, for symptoms, and 1,641, 18.9%, for no symptoms.

  • More residents testing positive have reported unknown than known exposure. On Monday, 22 persons who tested positive reported known exposure to COVID-19, and 33 reported no known exposure. Monday's cases brought the totals to 4,573, 52.5%, for unknown exposure and 4,132, 47.5%, for known contact.

  • Nearly half the residents testing positive live in the southeast quadrant of the county. Monday, the southeast quadrant had 20 of the new cases; the southwest had 21, and the northeast and northwest quadrants each had seven. Since March 2020, 4,243 cases (48.7%) have been in the southeast; 1,205 cases (13.8%) have been in the northwest; 1,597 cases (18.3%) have been in the northeast, and 1,660 cases (19.1%) have been in the southwest.

Among age groups, the 19-and-under group had the highest number: 15. The 40-to-49 and 50-to-59 groups each had eight; the 20-to-29 group and 30-to-39 groups each had six; the 60-to-69 and 80-89 groups each had five; the 70-to-79 group had two, and the 90-and-above group had none.

The numbers and percentages by age group are below:

  • 19-and-under: 1,636, 18.8%

  • 20-to-29: 1,392, 16.0%

  • 30-to-39: 1,295, 14.9%

  • 40-to-49: 1,132, 13.0%

  • 50-to-59: 1,190, 13.7%

  • 60-to-69: 1,024, 11.8%

  • 70-to-79: 599, 6.9%

  • 80-to-89: 321, 3.7%

  • 90-and-above: 116, 1.3%

St. Bonaventure University The university reported 46 people in the campus community have tested positive since June 1. Four persons have active cases; 42 have recovered.

New York’s Western Region Sunday, the region, which includes Cattaraugus County, saw an increase in the daily positivity rate to 7.4%. Saturday’s had been 6.1%. The seven-day average positivity rate was 6.4% on Sunday; it had been 6.2% on Saturday. Among the 6,997 tested Sunday, 521 were positive. More information from the state is available here.
