i demand

The women’s liberation movement began in the 18th century, and yet, I still find myself wondering why women, three centuries later, are forced to fight for our rights. Women have a significant place in society and have made enormous contributions to every aspect of it. I find myself thinking, time and time again, how much more do we have to do to prove ourselves?

Women’s rights are human rights. We have held marches, protests, campaigns and, literally, started a movement. We have fought for hundreds of years to prove we belong, we are smart and that we are strong. Yet, I find myself defending women, centuries later.

Although the United States has made great strides in the last fifty years, worldwide women are still fighting to be educated, appreciated and recognized.

This fight to simply be respected, or even paid the same, is one that needs to end. This stigma against the feminist movement, the #Metoo movement and just women in general is one that I demand to end.

Women need to unite, stick together and look out for each other. We need to prove, once again, that we have, and will again, stick up for ourselves. We cannot, and will not, be silenced.

I demand to stop being told I should be in front of a camera rather than behind a notepad. I demand to stop having to pull my skirt down when I walk away from a group of men. I demand to be looked at for my intelligence, capability and determination. I demand equality for all, despite gender, color or size. And I demand it now.

Rights for women is not just a desire, it is the justice we deserve. Silence is no longer an option.
